Top 3 Bay Area Hikes

Top 3 Bay Area Hikes

Pack up a backpack with some snacks, your S’well bottle – you’ll be glad you have cold water – and grab your Swell shades. There is never the excuse of rain to keep you indoors on the weekend in the Bay Area. Whether you are a local or just visiting, there are three hikes you must make a priority: Angel Island, Dipsy Trail, and Mount Diablo.

Angel Island is located in the middle of the Bay, meaning you will need to hop on the ferry to get to the trailhead. Though the easiest of the trails, this one does provide the closest and most picturesque views of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the surrounding area. It is a relatively easy five-mile hike through meadows and small patches of forest. Also on the island are historic barracks from the turn of the twentieth century. Definitely check the weather before going; you wouldn’t want to get caught on Angel Island on a foggy day in the bay.

Dipsy trail may be my personal favorite. Located in the Marin Headlands, this trail takes you through the redwoods in John Muir’s Woods to Stinson Beach. Budget for a solid day of hiking, as the trail is almost ten miles long. The views of the Pacific are juxtaposed with waterfalls and redwoods, making this the most naturally scenic trail on my list.

Mount Diablo is in the East Bay, and at 3,849 feet above sea level, it is one of the highest peaks in the surrounding area. From the top you can see as far as Sentinel Dome in Yosemite National Park, and the Sierras – this peak boasts one of the largest view sheds on the West Coast. There are a variety of hikes, ranging from three to ten miles, so you can choose the level of difficulty.

On your next hike don’t forget to take pictures of you and your Swells!
